Brixham
Buccaneers were formed in spring 2007 Brixham Pirate Day is the "flagship"
of the Brixham Buccaneers! Traders were encouraged to dress as pirates, fly flags and
decorate their shops with bunting etc All events in 2007 took place
on the Quay under the old Fish market and centred around a pirate cutout, a face painter, balloon modeller,a pirate being
soaked in the stocks and a knot tying display We had a popular monthly colouring competition
(that was also circulated around many local schools) and a "hunt the pirate" town trail . We were also proud to
be part of the Brixmas Christmas Procession.
We encouraged
traders to take advantage of excellent value floral displays and the chance to have details of their businesses on the www.brixhamnews.com website. We helped to ensure we had christmas lights in the
town and we set wheels in motion to try and obtain concessions from the Council for when regeneration work is underway We had a busy winter 07-08 with many meetings planning activities for 2008 The Brixham Pirate Thursdays were much more widely publicisied in 2008 and held in 2 different locations, one
indoor, one outdoor In 2008 we teamed up with Greenway ferry services
to provide treasure hunts and pirate cruises. There was a Johnny Depp lookalike and a town crier made his presence in town
The festival was a great success
-the world record attempt (greatest number of pirates in one
place } was well attended on May 3rd and Guinness confirmed (August 2009) that a gathering of 1467
pirates on May 3rd in Brixham was a NEW WORLD RECORD New for 2009-
Pirate Hoopla, and 2 new puppet show scripts introducing newcomer Squawk the parrot! Pippin, a real parrot was also present
on some occasions and the craft workshop was now to be found on the Quay where it proved to be very popular! Our mascot is Chalmondley who when he entered the fancy dress competition
(held late afternoon). usually won a prize because so far he was the only dog dressed as a pirate that has
ever entered the competition!
